Kenyan Purple Leaf
Yes, we said PURPLE!!! While this still comes from the same plant as all the other teas (Camellia sinensis), it is a fairly new varietal that has a purple hue instead. And yes, you guessed it, it is grown in Kenya. Its flavor is light and unique. Some will call it a green tea but it really is a category all of its own. The leaves have a higher level of anthocyanin, the flavonoid that causes blue/purple/black pigments in plants (ex. blueberries, pomegranate, black rice), so they are a deep red/purple instead of green.
